Very scary at the time and it was pretty touch and go but here I am! Doing great! We all learned how precious life is and are thankful for another year full of god's blessings our life is never a boring one and I will try to better keep up with this blog :)

Oh my aching thyroid!!!

Surgery it is... I will have a complete Thyroidectomy in my future. As soon as they can get some control over this enlarged beast. Doing surgery now is to dangerous so we have added more medication to help bring my levels down a little first. My heart has been greatly affected and I am to do nothing that may increase my heart rate (right..) until after surgery to keep it from further damage. After surgery we will look at my heart and pray it is restored... My surgeon and endocrinologist are the best I am so thankful and can't wait for the Thyroid storm to be over :) Seriously I can't believe it is as big as they showed me and can fit in my neck!! No wonder I have problems swallowing!

Go Rose!! Vote next Tuesday if you care about education in WI!!

Rose Fernandez Vows to Help Great Teachers Succeed
Meanwhile, Madison-Based Interest Group Spends More Than Half Million Dollars to Support the Status Quo

[Mukwonago, Wisconsin] Rose Fernandez, the nonpartisan candidate for State Superintendent with bipartisan support, said Tuesday that a Madison-based special interest group's misleading television ads will not work. She enters the final week of the campaign with momentum, and the broadest coalition of supporters, behind her.

"I take a back seat to no one when it comes to supporting great teachers," said Fernandez. "However their union, WEAC, is predictably spending more than a half million dollars in compulsory union dues to support their hand-picked, establishment candidate. It is no surprise that their ads not only distort my photograph, they distort my record and position on issues. The teachers who support me know I won't hold the actions of their misguided union against them."

WEAC will spend more money in this campaign than either candidate. Their current statewide ad misleads voters regarding Fernandez' agenda and even uses a PhotoShopped picture of Fernandez in a juvenile attempt to demonize her.

"The special interest power brokers at WEAC are troubled because I have a lot of support from their individual members," said Fernandez. "I didn't finish a mere four points behind my opponent in February despite being outspent 10:1 without a lot of support from teachers, administrators and school board members. The Madison-based special interest groups fear the fresh perspective and reforms I would bring to the status quo that they established, maintain and find so comfortable."
Fernandez said WEAC is on a spending spree to defeat her because she is a threat to their centralized power and influence.

THE FERNANDEZ TEACHER INNOVATION AGENDA

Decentralize DPI-Teacher Interaction
Reach out to individual teachers for input on issues and participation in working groups and study committees rather than relying on union leadership to provide input and select participants.

Teachers' Residency Program
Provide greater peer-mentoring for new educators during their first 3 years teaching in Wisconsin public schools.

Merit Pay Based on Performance and Competency
Empower district administrators and school principals to negotiate contracts so that funds, allocated under the QEO, could be disbursed so that raises would be given to teachers based on publicly-scrutinized standards. The standards would rely on a wide variety of benchmarks, not exclusively student performance on standardized tests

College Loan Forgiveness Initiative
Provide an incentive to get fresh, motivated teachers to work where they are most needed. Wisconsin college graduates who teach in under-performing and disadvantaged school districts would receive grants that could only be used toward their student loans. This would not only help alleviate Wisconsin's Brain Drain exodus of college graduates, it would help turn around troubled school districts.

Genuine Alternative Certification
Adopt an improved, genuine alternative teacher certification process for subject areas where there is a shortage of teachers. The certification would allow teachers to enter our classrooms from other professions without having to take time-consuming specialized education courses if they have a four-year undergraduate degree from a recognized college or university, pass an exam demonstrating that they have essential knowledge or skills, take a streamlined alternative certification program and pass a background check

Fernandez said that as State Superintendent, she will work with any person or group that puts the students' interests first.

"WEAC will still have a seat at the table during our work to improve Wisconsin's public schools," said Fernandez. "However, they will no longer be sitting at the head of the table. That's why they are spending so much to defeat me and, once again, get their hand-picked insider elected."

Pride and Self Righteousness

Today's Truth "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives" (1 John 1:9-10 NIV).
Friend to Friend Yesterday we looked at King David's sin and repentance. Now let's go back a few years in history to David's predecessor, King Saul. This was a time in Israel's history when God ruled the people through the prophets. It was known as a theocracy, but after a while, the people grew tired of being ruled by God. They decided that they wanted a King to rule over them...just like all the other nations. So God allowed them to have a King, and appointed a man named Saul, from the tribe of Benjamin. At first, Saul was terrified of his new assignment. In fact, at his coronation, they found him hiding among the baggage! However, he eventually settled into his new role and began enjoying all the perks.
God anointed Saul with the Holy Spirit and he even received the gift of prophesy. He led Israel into victory on several battlefields and depended on God for wisdom and strength...for a while.
But after a few months, Saul's confidence rose to the danger level, and he began to take matters into his own hands. Before going battle against the Philistines, Saul and his men were waiting on Samuel to offer the needed sacrifices to the LORD. After seven days, the time set by Samuel the prophet himself, Saul grew tired of waiting and his men began to get restless.
Oh how hard can it be, thought Saul. I'll just offer the sacrifice myself.
So Saul went against the commands of God and made himself a priest.
Samuel arrived just as Saul was putting the finishing touches on the altar.
"What have you done?" Samuel exclaimed!
"It's all your fault," Saul protested. "When you didn't come, the men started shaking in their sandals and scattering like flies. I had to do something! So I offered the sacrifice myself."
Saul didn't admit that he had done anything wrong. Rather he tried to justify his actions, placed the blame on someone else, and held his head high.
And that was the beginning of the end for Saul.
Did he learn his lesson? Oh, no. Just a few pages later, we see how he disobeyed God once again. God told him to go into battle against the Amalekites and destroy every living thing -- taking no plunder for himself. However, during the attack, he spared the Amalekite King and kept the best sheep, cattle, and everything that was good.
Once again, the prophet Samuel confronted Saul.
"I did everything the LORD commanded," Saul boasted. (Like God wouldn't know the difference.)
"Oh yeah," Samuel replied. "Then what's that baah noise I hear in the background?"
"Oh that. Well, we did take the best of the sheep and the cattle...to offer sacrifices to the LORD you understand."
Once again, Saul did not show any remorse for what he had done. Once again he justified his actions, placed blame on someone else, and held his head high.
"Stop it! Just stop it!" Samuel yelled in frustration. "God doesn't want your sacrifices. He wants you to obey Him. Haven't you figured that out by now?"
Unlike David, Saul was not sorry for what he had done. He was just sorry he got caught.
As a result, God took his kingdom away. He was finished.
Receiving God's grace and forgiveness has everything to do with our heart attitude toward the sin. "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6).
Let's Pray Dear LORD, forgive me when I've been like Saul and justified or tried to hide my sin. Help me be more like David -- truly repentant for the wrong I've done. Thank You for forgiving me completely and wholly when I come and with a humble heart.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Now It's Your Turn What do you see as the difference between David and Saul when confronted with their sin?
On a continuum from pride and brokenness, where do you fall in regard to your sin?
This is very important. Today's lesson is not to make you carry around guilt. It is to bring you to a place of repentance so that God can bless you. Let me share one more section from Your Scars are Beautiful to God.
God wants us to be broken over our sins, but then He takes those broken pieces and binds us back together to make us stronger and more useful than ever before. As long as we are clinging to the pieces of our broken lives, they remain just that...broken pieces.
Won't you open your clenched fist and offer your shattered past as a sacrifice to the Savior? He will heal you! He will use you! He will make you stronger than before!
(Ken Gire, Windows of the Soul (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan, 1996), p. 194.)
I've learned that a broken bone that has mended is strongest at its place of healing. Likewise, scar tissue is tougher and more resilient than virgin flesh. God can take the wounds of our lives and make us stronger than before.
Saul's light was snuffed out. David's shone brighter than before.
Before Jesus went to the cross, he served his disciples their last meal together. He broke bread which represented his body and passed the cup of wine, which represented his blood. This sacrament, often referred to as the Lord's Supper, has been celebrated for centuries. Isn't it interesting that both the wine and the bread are made through crushing -- both grain and grapes. Could it be that our lives, through crushing and brokenness, serve as a living sacrament or testimony, as a reminder of what Christ has done in our lives?
The closest communion with God comes, I believe, through the sacrament of tears. Just as grapes are crushed to make wine and grain to make bread, so the elements of this sacrament come from the crushing experiences of life.

This was a little too relevant....

Today's Truth "As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said." Luke 10:38-39 (NIV)

Have you ever bitten off more than you could chew? Have you ever said, "Sure, I'll be glad to do that!" when you should have said, "I'm sorry, but I can't commit to that right now?" Has an over-loaded schedule ever added stress to you, your family, or your relationships? I would think you've answered, "yes" to each of the previous questions. I know I did.
Each New Year, we have the opportunity to reflect on our lives and make positive adjustments. Two areas I constantly evaluate are my calendar and commitments. Trust me, I'm not the boundary queen. I won't even pretend to have all the answers about this topic, because I don't. I bow to the evil "yes monster" more than I care to admit. I'm in the trenches with you, constantly struggling to find a healthy balance between faith, family, friends, fashion, and ministry. (Okay, fashion doesn't really belong on that list, though it's terribly fun, I just wanted to see if you were paying attention!) J

Jesus had some friends named Mary and Martha. Martha was a busy girl who allowed her to-do list to keep her from worship. Mary just wanted to be with Jesus.
"As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her." Luke 10:38-42 (NIV)
This year, let's choose what's better! It's so important that we establish healthy boundaries in our lives to keep us from being too busy to sit at the Lord's feet. Over the years, I've been forced to grow in the area of setting boundaries in order to bless and preserve my faith, family, friendships and ministry. In an article called Setting Boundaries, Dr. Richard J. Krejcir wrote, "A boundary is a fence to ward of potential problems and to protect those in its guardianship."
What does that look like in real life? How can we possibly spend time with the Lord, keep our homes clean, run errands, go to meetings, serve on committees, change diapers, shower, find missing teddy bears, take Johnny to little league, run Sally to dance practice, and have a hot, healthy dinner on the table by six o'clock? I'm sure it will look different for each of us, but there's one basic parameter that applies across the board, whether you are married, divorced, single, or widowed, or with or without children: make time for God.

Jesus said that the highest call on your life is to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" (Matthew 22:37). Keep the main thing the main thing! Nothing should replace your personal time with God. Set aside time each day for Bible study, prayer, and worship. Jesus tells us that we must remain in Him. "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5).

And one additional thought: protect your passions. What do you love to do? Is there time in your life for it? Make it a priority. Allow yourself time to refuel and relax by scheduling fun time. Whether it's taking a hike in the woods, playing the piano, having lunch with a girlfriend, reading a book, or bargain shopping, keep your heart fed with fun. You'll be a better you for it!
Once you've established faith boundaries that prioritize and protect your time with Jesus, you can freely say "yes" to the opportunities that are in line with your passion and interests. You can also say "no" to the yes monster that tries to rob you of God's best and to dilute your focus.

Lord, please forgive me for the times when I clutter my life with busyness and fail to put You first. Help me to discern what is best for my schedule according to Your perfect will, and equip me with the wisdom and courage to make any changes that are needed. I love You and long to know you more with all my heart, mind, and soul.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Now It's Your Turn Do you relate more with Mary or Martha?
Are you saying yes to too many things? Protect you and your family from the evil yes monster. Take a few moments to consider if any of your activities could be eliminated.
